Bettina Boateng

"Your passion will pin you to your purpose."  It's the innate passion to learn information, share it with the masses,  in hopes of a progressive and positive outcome that motivates Bettina Boateng.

With roots  in Ghana, West Africa, Bettina grew up in the "Bayou City" of Houston, Texas. She joined Alabama's 13 News in 2007 and now serves as one of the main anchors of Alabama's 13 News "Today in Alabama." In addition to her daily anchoring and reporting duties, Bettina conducts various special reports on the Birmingham metro area which can be seen on the station's various newscasts. With a strong interest for science, nature and the environment, Bettina spends her spare time in the weather center when she is not covering the news.

Bettina has studied as a broadcast meteorology student through Mississippi State University's broadcast meteorology program and she enjoys working with the Alabama's 13 Weather team as a fill-in forecaster while working toward becoming a meteorologist one day.

Bettina is no stranger to the South and other parts of the world. She's worked in Texas with ABC News Radio WBAP and CBS 11 in Dallas, as well as CNN Politics and FOX 5 News in Atlanta. She has also traveled to film news documentaries about education and culture in Ghana, and has reported on injured military personnel recuperating at the Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.

Bettina graduated from Southern Methodist University's Meadows School of the Arts , Journalism Department in Dallas, Texas. She earned a degree in Convergence Journalism with an Emphasis in Broadcast News. Bettina is a recipient of journalism awards from the Associated Press and South Carolina Broadcaster's Association. Most recently, Bettina was nominated for an Emmy award for her team reporting on a former Birmingham Mayor's criminal indictment. She also holds an AP award for her one-hour documentary "The Lowcountry to Africa: The Ghana Connection."

Bettina loves to mentor and actively supports local schools by volunteering her time to read to young students and speak to older students about careers and making a difference in the community through service. A proud member of Birmingham's Rotaract Club, Bettina spends her spare time holding and soothing babies at The Benjamin Russell Children's Hospital.

Bettina and her husband passionately support numerous non-profit service oriented organizations aimed at youth empowerment. They also are starting a non profit organization called Basketball Africa that empowers, educates and elevates the lives of African children through basketball skills training, service focused mentorship and life skill education.
