My wife Amy talks more about being happy than I do. She’s more aware of other people and their feelings than I am. I’ve just always thought that your happiness is up to you, sort of your own business. If you’re not happy, then do something about it, change something. But, my wife and other good people I know think about things they can do to help make someone happier and they often put those thoughts into action.
Whether it’s a gift, or a cake, or getting the family together for 4th of July food and fireworks, it’s done with the idea of making others happy. It’s a powerful thing and effort that I notice and admire.
I read a book this past week that’s mostly about happiness. I read it because I was asked to do a story about former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Drayton Nabers and the book he’s written. It’s titled The Hidden Key to Happiness. It’s a book about Drayton Nabers’ faith; it’s about prayer and obedience, hope and character. It’s a challenging book, not that it’s difficult to read, but rather it challenges you to live what you believe.
If you don’t believe much of anything, if you think we’re all just accidentally thrown onto the highway of chance then you probably won’t embrace much of what Drayton Nabers writes about. Because what he talks about is the obedience of faith and the end results of real happiness — good happiness as he calls it.
I don’t get to read nearly as much as I’d like. Lately, I’ve done a couple of stories about books, which required me to read. I think I need to require myself to find the time to read more. The Hidden Key to Happiness challenged me, I needed that. It helped me with my on-going battle with priorities and keeping them straight.
You won’t regret reading this fine book written by a fine man. It turns out the hidden key to happiness isn’t really that hidden, you just have to know where to look.
Drayton Nabers challenged me this week to work for good and strive to always make myself and others happy. You can’t go wrong when you do that.
See you weeknights at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00pm.
