Blog: Top ten games of the week

By Patrick Pierce

Last week was a week that separated the contenders from the pretenders, and as October rolls along more and more pretenders will continue to fall. The big question for this week is will LSU drop back to back SEC regular season games? It’s been a long time since the Tigers have lost in Death Valley, but the Gamecocks know a win will take them another step forward in the national title picture.

Here are my Top Ten Games of Week 6:

10.  #19 Mississippi State vs.Tennessee – Saturday – 8:00pm CST – ESPN 2

The Bulldogs are off to their best start in over a decade, but Derek Dooley and his Tennessee Vols are desperate to pick up a victory in a very tough October. I think this could be a high scoring game that comes down to the wire.

9. #4 Florida @ Vanderbilt – Saturday – 5:00pm CST – ESPN U

The Gators are coming off a huge win over LSU and it’s hard to get up for two games in a row. I look for Florida to enter this game a little flat, and a flat Gator team on the road in Nashvillewill be the ingredients to keep this game close.

 8. #1 Alabama @ Missouri– Saturday – 2:30pm CST CBS

At times this game has looked very intriguing, but last weeks loss to Vanderbilt plus their starting quarterback Franklin’s injury has taken a lot of the buzz away from this matchup. Alabama is coming off of a bye week and shouldn’t struggle too much with the Tigers.

7. #11 USC @ Washington – Saturday – 6:00pm CST FOX

This could be a tricky game for the very inconsistent Trojans playing at Washington. If the game was back home in L.A. I would like USC chances a little more. The Trojan’s defense has been shredded at times and Keith Price of Washington will put a lot of pressure on USC and their secondary.

6. #10 Oregon State @ BYU – Saturday – 2:30pm CST ABC/ESPN 3

This game has upset alert written all over it. I like what the badgers have been able to accomplish this season and their just now starting to get the respect of a top ten ranking. The bad news for the badgers is they have lost their starting quarterback for an unknown about mount of time. BYU has struggled on offense, but their defense has been a lock down unit.

5.  #5 West Virginia @ Texas Tech – Saturday – 2:30pm CST ABC

The secrete to beating the Mountaineers is simple, just score about 101 points and I think you can maybe pull it off. All joking aside no one has been able to stop Geno Smith and his high powered offense, but it’s a long ways out to rural western Texas and the Red Raiders might have just enough to keep this game close. The real key to beating West Virginiais a great running game that chews away at the clock keeping Smith on the sidelines.

 4. #22 Texas A&M @ #23 Louisiana Tech – Saturday – 8:00pm CST – ESPNU

This game was supposed to be played in September, but was canceled to let a hurricane move ashore. Fast-forwarding to October and both teams are national ranked and looking very impressive.

3. #7 Notre Dame vs. #17 Stanford – Saturday – 2:30pm CST –Alabama’s 13

Every week that goes by the Irish of Notre Dame seem to get stronger and stronger. This week will be their toughest test yet. The Stanford Cardinals know all to well how to spoil a team’s season, and they have already proved once this year that they have the weapons to do so.

2. #13 Oklahoma vs #15Texas – Saturday - 11:00am CST - ABC

It’s the Red River Shootout….. I mean Rivalry. This classic matchup at theTexas state fair is always a must watch in the college football world. The winner might not be poised for a national title run, but the winner will be looking at setting themselves up for a BCS bowl berth.

1.  #9 LSU vs. #3 South Carolina– Saturday – 7:00pm CST - ESPN

It’s the only top 10 versus top 10 game this week and that easily makes it our number 1 game of the week. Both teams are coming off monstrous games last week and it will be interesting to see how the results affect the tone of the game. South Carolina is coming off a big win and must try to come off of that high; meanwhile LSU is coming off a loss and has to find away to not only pick themselves up, but fix the problems that lead to the loss. I look for LSU to come out swinging as they try to get their swagger back, but if they can’t find their offense then the Gamecocks will win.
