University of Alabama President Guy Bailey announced today that he would be stepping down from his position, which he officially took Sept. 3.
In a statement released this afternoon, Bailey cited his wife Jan’s health concerns as the reason for the change. UA officials knew that his wife was sick when Bailey was hired.
“We want to thank the faculty, staff, students, alumni and our many friends for your warm welcome,” Bailey said in his statement. “My family and I appreciate your understanding and your prayers.
Statements from both Paul Bryant Jr., president pro tempore of the UA Board of Trustees, and Dr. Robert E. Witt, Chancellor of the University of Alabama system said they respect and understand Bailey’s decision.
Bryant said the board of trustees have a special called meeting Thursday to discuss presidential succession.
