Youth minister of "The Basement" arrested for impersonating a peace officer

By Shannon Delcambre

The youth minister of the worship movement, called "The Basement" was arrested in Calera.

The Calera Police Department reports Larry Matthew Pitt, 28, of Birmingham, was arrested and charged with impersonating a peace officer Friday, May 11, 2012.

The CPD received complaints that an unmarked SUV driving along I-65 was pulling behind traffic and activating emergency flashing blue lights.

When traffic began pulling over, the SUV would turn off the lights, and speed around traffic.

Calera Police officers stopped the vehicle, and approached Pitt, who then held up his wallet displaying a badge and photo ID.

Officers asked if he was an officer, and Pitt stated he was a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicle Pitt was not registered with any law enforcement agency, and was equipped with multiple working LED flashing blue lights in the fog lights, grill, front windshield, and back window.

The vehicle was also equipped with a working emergency siren.

Officers verified that Pitt was not a certified law enforcement officer, and was arrested and placed in the Shelby County Jail.
