Blog: On the hardwood

By Patrick Pierce

On the hardwood is a weekly college basketball blog recapping and previewing Alabama, Auburn, and UAB men’s basketball.

Alabama (7-4)

What you need to know:

  • The Tide started the season off red hot winning their first six games, but the Tide has cooled off losing four out of their last five.
  • Alabama has just two nonconference games left in their final tune up before conference play.
  • Next up for the Tide is a Sunday home gave versus Tulane followed by Oakland.

Stat Leaders:

Trevor Releford is scoring 16.3 points per game.

Rodney Cooper is rebounding 4.6 per game.

Trevor Lacey averages 3.5 assists per game.

Bracket Madness:

The loss to Mercer really put a major dent in the Tide’s resume and makes the last two nonconference games must wins. If the season ended right now the Tide would be lucky to make it into the play in game and would be looking at a high NIT seed.

Auburn (5-6)

What you need to know:

  • Auburn’s winning streak only lasted three games after a disappointing loss to Winthrop last week.
  • The Tigers have a huge game today versus #12 Illinois in Chicago. If Auburn pulls off the upset it would be a major statement that the Tigers are moving in the right direction.
  • The January 2nd Auburn vs. Florida State game time has been changed to 6pm and will be televised by FSS.

Stat Leaders:

Chris Denson is scoring 17.0 points per game.

Rob Chubb is rebounding 7.4 per game.

Frankie Sullivan averages 3.6 assists per game.

Bracket Madness:

Auburn has a fighter’s chance at winning at a couple of statement games, but the Tigers are a long shot at earning any post season play.

UAB (6-6)

What you need to know:

  • UAB will be trying to remain prefect at home when they host Northeastern today at 2pm.
  • The Blazers are putting up some impressive number this season. So far the Blazers are 33rd in the nation in points per game and 10th overall in assists.

Stat Leaders:

Jordan Swing is scoring 15.4 points per game.

Rob Rucker is rebounding 7.3 per games.

Terence Jones averages 4.3 assists per game.

Bracket Madness:

Unless UAB turns a major corner beating Dayton and dominating C-USA then I don’t see a path for the Blazers besides winning the C-USA Tournament.
