Rocky McCord went a career-long six innings and struck out a career-high six hitters while Jordan Ebert had two hits and extended his hitting streak to nine games as the Auburn baseball team defeated Eastern Illinois, 8-2, on Sunday to claim the series. The win improves Auburn's record to 8-3 while Eastern Illinois fell to 3-7.
"I thought (Rocky) did a good job getting deeper into the game, which is important for him and important for our club and what we are trying to do," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said.
Making his third start of the season, McCord (1-0) surrendered just three hits and three walks on the afternoon and kept Eastern Illinois off the scoreboard for his entire outing. Only once, in the first inning, did Eastern Illinois advance a runner past second against the sophomore, who earned his first career win.
"Today wasn't my best day, I didn't have my best stuff but the defense played well and I finally got a win," McCord said. "Coach (Pawlowski) worked on me just attacking the zone. I was coming right at them and throwing it down the middle and letting it move and letting them hit it and it worked out."
Auburn never trailed in the game.
