BIRMINGHAM, AL -

Drivers in part of downtown Birmingham may experience some delays beginning Monday, March 18th.

Crews with the Alabama Department of Transportation will be conducting geotechnical investigations for proposed replacement of the I-59/I-20 Central Business District bridges in the area of the Birmingham/Jefferson Civic Center.

ALDOT says the work will consist of soil borings along various Birmingham streets.

Here's a look at the area and a few things drivers should keep in mind:

  • 24th Street; 31st Street; and 11th Avenue North between 31st Street and 14th Street
  • This work will continue seven days per week from March 18 until March 29
  • The work will resume on April 1 and will continue thru April 12
  • This work may require intermittent lane closures on city streets to accomplish the work.
  • All travel lanes will be reopened to traffic by 3:30 p.m. each day

Drivers are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.

For additional road closure information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.
