BIRMINGHAM, AL -
A day full of events to mark the birthday of a civil rights icon kicked off Monday morning with a breakfast.
A community breakfast was held at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to honor Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.
Rev. Shuttlesworth would have been 91 years old.
After the breakfast event, a wreath laying ceremony was held at the civil rights icon's statue.
Also today, a children's birthday rally in Birmingham, and an evening of jazz and trivia.
The bells of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham tolled a total of 91 times during the day.
Rev. Shuttlesworth died in 2011.
