Council Extra: Birmingham leader says profiling ok to save lives, proposes checkpoints after shooting

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL -

After a Sunday night shooting at Birmingham's Railroad Park killed a teen, a Birmingham leader said profiling is ok to protect life and proposed setting up checkpoints around the signature park and throughout the city.

Councilor Steven Hoyt made part of the remarks at a Birmingham City Council meeting. Hoyt thinks the checkpoints can remove guns from the hands of kids.

Councilor Lashunda Scales joined Hoyt in calling for the checkpoints but added she wants to see beefed up security and more community engagement with children and parents throughout the city.

Mayor William Bell remained silent on the matter at the meeting. His office said he was not holding media availability today.
