Bill Battle recommended as new AD for the University of Alabama

Posted: Updated:

A new Athletics Director for the University of Alabama may be officially named in less than hours forty eight hours after Mal Moore announced he's stepping down from the position citing health issues.

President Judy Bonner announced she along with former A.D. Mal Moore would be recommending former Alabama football player Bill Battle.

There's no denying former Athletics Director Mal Moore's impact on UA athletics.

Trent Davidson was on the Alabama football team from 2004-2008. He said. "Just to know, you know that somebody like Coach Moore had been there and been in your shoes and had seen it from just about every aspect. So it wasn't like it was just you know a stranger to the game or what you were going through and you could really relate to him because he was still a player in his heart."

Moore's endorsement of Bill Battle is convincing enough for some Bama fans.

Though Battle may not be as recognizable as Moore the men have something's in common as their listed as a part of Paul Bear Bryant's 1961 football team.

The potential A.D. said his first instinct was to say no, but later changed his mind. "The University of Alabama is at an all-time high in athletics, academics and most every other way, and I am deeply honored to be asked to serve in the position of Athletics Director. It is an extraordinary challenge and a responsibility that I take very seriously. I will do my dead-level best to continue the successes on and off the playing fields that Alabama fans have enjoyed over the past few years," Battle said.

Samuel Conyers said he officiated football practices when battle played for Paul Bryant.

"He was a typical what I call a Bryant player. Coach Bryant use to say he was a champion with the in betweeners," Conyers said.  "And bill certainly fell into that group. He was a typical Alabama player, giving all he had every down."

And it's that type of effort Bama fans expect battle will continue to give to UA athletics.

The executive committee of the Alabama Systems Board of Trustees will meet via conference call tomorrow at ten a.m. to consider Dr. Bonner's recommendation.
