Sheriff's deputies say the fatal shooting of a mother and her child, that left another child critically injured, is a tragic result of domestic violence.
On Wednesday, a mother and her two children were found in the Park at Rocky Ridge Apartments in Jefferson County. The woman and one of her children were dead. The second, a five-year-old child, was alive but severely wounded.
Jefferson County sheriff's Chief Deputy Randy Christian identified the mother as Tiffany Bozeman, 30 and Gabrielle Menefee, 3. Davieon Menefee is in critical condition, but stable. Christian said the boy may have a spinal injury was shot in the neck.
The father of the children and former boyfriend of Bozeman, Brandon Menefee of Midfield, was found dead in a vehicle in Fairfield.
The coroner's office believes the gunshot wound was self-inflicted - leading detectives to believe the case is a murder-suicide.
Christian said the handgun recovered from Menefee's vehicle was a 40 caliber and is consistent with shell casings found inside the apartment of his children and former girlfriend.
Deputies said the couple recently split and Menefee was having a hard time dealing with it.
Christian said so far, the sheriff's office has not found any records of domestic calls from the apartment, but is checking with other law enforcement agencies.
Alabama's 13 Ashley Roberts will have more on this story tonight at 5 and 6.
