Junior pitcher Leigh Streetman threw her second no-hitter of the season on Friday night as UAB topped Southern Miss,1-0, at the UAB Softball Field.
UAB now stands at 20-7 on the season with a 9-1 mark in Conference USA action while Southern Miss is 11-22 with a record of 1-8 in league play.
Friday's win marks the 400th of head coach Marla Townsend's career.
"400 is a number, and what it says is that this program has been around for a while and every person that's come through this program has contributed to that number," Townsend said. "It shows where we're headed and I'm just proud. I'm happy about it, but I'm ready for 401. I'm proud of everyone who's come through this program from day one and the family atmosphere we've had from the first pitch back in 2000 to where we are today."
Streetman (8-3) retired the Golden Eagle batters in order in the second, third and seventh innings en route to picking up a season-high 13 strikeouts. The mark also ties her career best, which was set on March 16, 2012 as UAB topped UMKC, 3-1.
"I was proud of the way Leigh (Streetman) came out tonight," Townsend said. "She told me yesterday that she was ready, and she did a great job getting ahead, especially when they battled so hard in the first inning. She did a good job of mixing up her pitches and mixing up the speeds. I wasproud of her and the defense behind her, who she trusted to back her up. She pitched an outstanding game."
The Blazers put a pair of runners in scoring position in both the second and third innings, but failed to capitalize until the bottom of the fourth frame, when senior right fielder Chandler Orr reached on an error by Southern Miss' second baseman.
Orr was advanced to second base when sophomore left fielder Hayley Davis drew a walk, and was batted home for the lone run of the game on the next at-bat, when sophomore third baseman Amy Dennis hit a two-out single to right field.
In the circle for Southern Miss, Beth Dietrich (1-7) allowed six hits and walked three Blazer batters.
Up next, UAB and Southern Miss will play the final two games of the series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 10 a.m. CT.
