Birmingham mayor says abandoned buildings are an epidemic

Posted: Updated:

The Birmingham Fire Department Battalion Chief CW Mardis said he is unsure how the fire started, but he said it most likely didn't start by itself.   He told said there was no electricity in the building.

Mardis said the fire is under investigation indefinitely.  He also said the department aims to find how and what or who started the fire.

No one was in the building.  As far as they know, it was abandoned. Mayor William Bell is concerned about abandoned buildings within the city.  He said that is where the potential fire problem starts.

"It's almost an epidemic problem here in the city.  You have people who abandon their homes then people look to the city to do something about it.   People abandon buildings, they look to the city to do something about it. We spend millions upon millions of dollars on abandoned homes and abandoned buildings that could go into other productive measures in our community, but people just either walk away or ignore their responsibilities."

Bell said the building was used in the past as office spaces.
