BIRMINGHAM, AL — College of Charleston pitcher Nathan Helvey allowed no runs through 8.0 innings of work in leading the Cougar baseball team to a 10-0 win in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series at Samford Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The win gives College of Charleston the series sweep of Samford. Charleston improves to 16-11 overall and 7-4 in SoCon play, while Samford drops to 15-13 overall and 5-7 in league play. The loss marks the first time Samford has been shut out in a game since May 29, 2011, when the Bulldogs lost, 1-0, to Georgia Southern in the title game of the SoCon Tournament.
Helvey (3-2) allowed just three hits in earning the win. He struck out two batters, while allowing two walks. Ryan West pitched the final inning, giving up one hit to finish the game for the Cougars.
Samford's offense produced four hits in the loss. Drew McWhorter, Damon Waller, Jared Watson and Anthony Gonzalez had one hit each for the Bulldogs. Cole Limbaugh (2-1) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Eric Wright, Charles Terry, Patrick McGavin and Patrick Maronde also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
College of Charleston's offense produced 10 runs on 13 hits, including three home runs. Gunnar Heidt went 3-for-6 with a home run and five RBI. Brandon Murray went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Ben Boykin finished 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Blake Butler also went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars.
College of Charleston jumped on top right away with four runs in the top of the first inning. Alex Pastorius walked and Tyler Jackson was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Heidt then homered to left field for a 3-0 Cougar lead. Murray then hit a solo home run to right-center field to make the score 4-0.
The Cougars added two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to make the score 7-0. In the fourth inning, Jackson and Heidt drove in a run each. In the fifth inning, Boykin hit a solo home run to right field for a seven-run Cougar lead.
College of Charleston added three final runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 10-0. Heidt, Murray and Butler drove in a run each to give the Cougars a 10-run lead.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, April 2, when the Bulldogs play at Jacksonville State.
