Samford junior outfielder Phillip Ervin singled to center field to drive in Zeth Stone in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Samford a 3-2 win over Wofford in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Ervin went 1-for-4 with an RBI on the night. He was playing his first game since missing the last three games with an injury.
Austin Allison, who was also coming back after missing a few games, went 2-for-3, while Richard Greene went 2-for-2 for the Bulldogs. C.K. Irby drove in a run in a 1-for-4 performance, while serving as both the designated hitter and pitcher. Stone also drove in a run, going 1-for-3.
Irby (5-2) pitched 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Arthur Strauss came in to pitch the ninth inning, striking out the side to earn his fifth save of the season.
