Tuscaloosa school destroyed by tornado begins rebuilding

Posted: Updated:

Today, a groundbreaking event will be held for the new Alberta School of Performing Arts. The new school will be built on the site where Alberta Elementary School once stood.

Alberta Elementary School and much of the surrounding area was destroyed by a tornado on April 27, 2011. Since that time, students have been housed on the campus of Tuscaloosa Magnet School.

Last fall, the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education approved plans for a new school that would integrate performing arts electives with core curriculum. In the plans approved by the Board of Education, some of the performing arts electives could include, dance, theater, instrumental and vocal music, visual art and piano.

Alberta School of Performing Arts will house Pre-K through 8thgrade students. The Board of Education says there will be spaces available for students who live outside the Alberta attendance zone.

Today's groundbreaking event will be at 4 p.m. at 2700 University Boulevard. Alberta School of Performing Arts is scheduled to open fall of 2014.
