The UNCG baseball team scored five runs in the ninth inning to break open a tied game on its way to an 8-3 win over Samford in the second game of a three-game Southern Conference series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford drops to 25-22 overall and 10-12 in SoCon play. UNCG improves to 20-27 overall and 7-16 in league play. The win by UNCG ties the series at a game apiece, with the rubber game set for Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
For Samford at the plate, Christiaan Durdaller went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. The home run was Durdaller's team-leading 12th of the season. C.K. Irby went 3-for-4 with a double in the loss, while Austin Allison was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs.
Irby (7-4) pitched 8.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Irby struck out five batters, while allowing three walks in the loss. Arthur Strauss, Patrick McGavin and Parker Curry combined to get the final two outs for the Bulldogs.
