The city of Tuscaloosa is accomplishing a project that has been in the works for decades.
This week a company broke ground on a new hotel in downtown central business district in Tuscaloosa.
Over the next year and a half, the Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission president said they're will be about 150 construction employees working on a $31 million hotel.
The new Embassy Suites will be on the corner of University Boulevard and Greensboro Avenue. Guest will be in walking distance to museums, the amphitheater, and local restaurants.
With 154 suites and 60 hotel related jobs when the project is complete, the Tourism Commission president, Susan West said the hotel will be help revamp the downtown Tuscaloosa area.
"I think that this is going to kind of be the anchor of downtown. I mean downtown is already on its way, well on its way for revitalization, but I think this will really give it a spark and cause you know more of a destination for downtown Tuscaloosa and the river front," West added.
The commission president said from a business prospective is the 5,300 square feet of banquet and meeting space in the hotel will be a bonus.
The Kemmons Wilson Companies of Memphis, TN will develop and manage the hotel property, which will be owned by the KW – Tuscaloosa Hotel Partners, LLC.
