Personal Best: Hot Yoga

Posted: Updated:

In Alabama we are use to the heat, but some people are making it extra hot just to workout.

We sent Kyle Burger and Donnette' Hulsey to Bikram Yoga Birmingham to find out about Hot Yoga.

In the Class students are put through 26 poses in 105-plus degree heat for 90 minutes.

Bikram is a form of yoga created by Bikram Choudhury who came to this country from India after helping president Richard M. Nixon in the 1970s.

Nixon had phlebitis and was in excruciating pain on a visit to India. Choudhury, well known in India, was summoned to help. He gave Nixon some poses to ease the pain and Nixon was so impressed he invited him to come to the U.S.

He did and his legend grew. So too his business with 400 Bikram studios in the U.S. teaching his version of "hot yoga" as it is sometimes called.

Devotees -- like Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, Goldie Hawn, Bill Ford and Arts, Beats and Eats CEO Jon Witz -- swear by it -- saying it is unmatched in stretching and strengthening muscles and helping limit the effects of aging.
