More school consolidations are underway in Birmingham, much to the dismay of some school board members.
Tuesday night, the board discussed consolidating Norwood Elementary with Lewis Elementary, and Jackson Elementary with Hemphill Elementary.
Board members voted both proposals down.
However Dr. Ed Richardson, who leads the current state takeover of the Birmingham City School system, overruled the board's vote.
That decision upset some board members including Emanuel Ford from District 4.
Ford, along with some people in the audience, walked out of the meeting.
School leaders are also considering switching Jones Valley K-8 school to Jones Valley Middle School.
That decision has been tabled for now.
A community meeting on the proposal has been scheduled for Monday, May 13, at Jones Valley.
The grade structure change could come up for a vote at the board meeting the following day.
