Alabama Teacher of the Year will be announced tonight

Wednesday night, the Alabama State Department of Education will host a celebration to announce the winner of the 2013-2014 Alabama Teacher of the Year Award.

The finalists for this year's award are:

Elementary

· Tracy Pruitt, Montana Street Academic Magnet School, Dothan City, District II

· Kathy Perkins, Verner Elementary School, Tuscaloosa City, District VII

Secondary

· Jeff S. Johnson, Hoover High School, Hoover City, District III

· Dr. Alison Grizzle, P.D. Jackson Olin High School, Birmingham City, District IV

Alabama's Teacher of the Year spends most of the school year serving as a representative for education and the teaching profession in the state. The state winner also goes on to compete for National Teacher of the Year.

The 2012-2013 Alabama Teacher of the Year was Suzanne Culbreth, a math teacher from Spain Park High School.

Along with the finalist, this year's 12 semi-finalist will be recognized at the ceremony. Tonight's celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the RSA Plaza Terrace in Montgomery.
