Pizitz Middle School Band has won a national award.
The students won a Sudler Cup. This award is only given to one or two middle school bands in the country each year. It is presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
In order to win this award, the band must have repeatedly been rated "superior" at state, regional, or national levels in concert activities. A number of the students must also participate in district and all-state honor bands. The total program of music should also exemplify what is considered a sound viable, music education program for their level.
The Pizitz music program serves 240 students in grades 6-8. The program consists of the top ensemble Symphonic Band, under the direction of Kim Bain; a concert band, led by Assistant Director Leah Seng; a beginning band program and an audition-based jazz program.
This award comes on the heels of the Symphonic Band being picked as one of four bands from across the nation invited to perform at the Music for All Festival in Indianapolis. PIzitz students performed at this festival in March.
The Award Ceremony for the Sudler Cup will be Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Students will also perform for their peers on Friday, May 17 at 8:40 a.m. at the middle school.
