Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has released his preseason bowl projections for 2013. Palm has Alabama playing Ohio State in Pasadena for the BCS Championship. Meanwhile Auburn will be once again sitting at home during the holiday season.
If Palm's projection holds true this would mean Auburn would have back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since the late 90's.
Last year's Auburn football team was embarrassing and extremely hard to watch. The (5-19) Gene Chizik showed up and the program was in disarray. Gus Malzahn is now in control and "it's a new day" down on the plains. There is a new attitude at Auburn you can hear it in the voices of the Auburn football players. How it will translate on the field in year one remains to be seen.
Auburn still has a lot of question marks especially at quarterback, and it will take some time for Malzahn to recruit players to fit his system.
But will Auburn go bowling in 2013? Here's a look at Auburn's 2013 schedule:
I think the "mad scientist" Mike Leach will have some success in Pullman and the PAC-12, but it's going to take time. Washington State has been in the dumps for a long time, and I don't see them going across country week 1 of the season and beating Auburn.
It's Gus Malzahn's old team, but I think Auburn should make it past the Red Wolves of the Sunbelt.
This is the first swing game for the Tigers. Auburn lost to Mississippi State last season, and this could be Gus Malzahn's first loss as Auburn's head coach. I don't think State is that much better than Auburn and this will truly be a swing game for both teams.
Going in to Death Valley is never a good thing. Auburn could be 3-0 heading into this game, but I don't see them upsetting LSU.
I think the two Mississippi school are going to define the season for Auburn. Losing to both would put Auburn in a really big hole early in the season. Auburn needs to at least spilt the two Mississippi games. I think Ole Miss is the better of the two Mississippi schools, but they are a beatable team.
Auburn will win this one easy.
Can't see Auburn going into Kyle Field and upsetting the Aggies.
This should be an easy win for the Tigers.
Auburn starts a very important road stretch at Arkansas. The Razorbacks are a big mystery and much like Auburn we really don't know what kind of team they will put on the field in 2013.
Auburn has owned Tennessee here of late, but both teams are going through major transitions and it will be interesting to see what these teams even look like in November of next season. Auburn has to spilt the Arkansas/Tennessee road stretch, and I think that is likely
Georgia still looks like the top dog in the SEC east and with the return of Aaron Murray I don't see Auburn winning this game.
Alabama is leaps and bounds ahead of Auburn. I can't see the state turning blue and orange next season.
This gives Auburn 4 wins and 4 losses with 4 swing games. The season for Auburn really comes down to the Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Tennessee games. If Auburn wins all four swing games the Tigers will have a great year at (8-4), but if the Tigers can't find away to win a swing game or two then they will be looking at another postseason at home.
I project that Auburn will at least spilt the swing games and finish (6-6) and return to post season play.
