The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) reports that two suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with an insurance fraud investigation.
Police have arrested 55 year old Roderick Caffey on an insurance fraud warrant with a bond of $20,000.
Police also arrested 50-year-old Rita Barnes also on an insurance fraud warrant with a bond of $20,000.
BPD Major Fraud detectives conducted an investigation after the two suspects demanded money from the insurance company of a local business.
The payment was demanded after police say the first suspect placed a liquid substance on the floor of the business and the second suspect pretended to slip on the substance.
Investigators reviewed the store surveillance video that captured the incident.
The Insurance Fraud Law has been in effect since August, 2012 which makes insurance fraud a Class B Felony
The Birmingham Police Department Major Fraud Unit says it is the first in the State of Alabama to make arrests on this newly passed legislation.
