The UAB men's golf team earned an at-large berth to the ncaa men's golf national championship.
The UAB men's golf team will take their cuts at some of the country's stiffiest competition in NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.
The Blazers earned an at-large berth in the LSU Regional.
"The field is unbelievable," UAB golfer Wilson McDonald said. "It's kind of what you expect when you get in the regionals."
That field includes number two Alabama, number 10 Florida, number 17 LSU and 23rd-ranked Mississippi State.
"It does help to be an underdog," Paul Dunne, UAB golfer said. "We don't consider ourselves being underdogs. We can compete with them. We have the same expectation as they do."
The Blazers are making their second NCAA regional appearance in as many years -- and they're doing that with the same five players that qualified for nationals last year.
"We didn't have a good fall season," UAB golfer Sam Love said. "We were pushing it to get in. I'm glad we made it. Once we get to regionals, it's anybody's game."
The regional is being played at the University Club in Baton Rogue. UAB played there last year, so they know what to expect from one of the country's most difficult golf courses.
"It's a very hard course," head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Its' a course that no one looks forward to playing on it."
"It's definitely a course where par is a good score," McDonald added. It's not a course where you make a bunch of birdies."
UAB looks to send Kaufman out a winner in his 15th and final season as head coach. Kaufman thinks that there is no better time than now.
"This thing is all predestined by the golf gods," Kaufman said. "I went to college in Baton Rogue. Grew up in Atlanta. If we get to the finals, we're going to Atlanta. That will be a neat way to end the career. Baton Rogue to Atlanta."
The LSU Regional will take place May 16-18.
