BLOG: Saban not done building his legacy

Posted: Updated:

If Nick Saban was to walk away from the college football world today he would go down as one of the all-time greatest.

Saban has won it all. Four BCS Championships, four SEC Championships, numerous coach of the year honors and after this weekend he's a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

But is that legacy good enough for Saban?

"The thing about this is when you're in it, and I'm still in it you always worry about the next game" Saban said on Saturday at the ASHOF luncheon.

Most people don't get inducted into a hall of fame while they're still mastering their trade. Being inducted into a hall of fame is something that is usually reserved for people at the end of their career, or even an honor after they have passed away. Being inducted into a hall of fame means that you were great, you stood out, you made a mark in your trade, you deserve to be honored. There's no dough that Nick Saban deserved a spot in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame with the likes of Paul "Bear" Bryant" and Ralph "shug" Jordan whose statue sits out front. There's even an argument that Nick Saban is the greatest to ever coach in Alabama, but Saban knows the company that he's in.

"This honor makes it even more of a challenge" Saban said. "All the great names here and I feel like I have to go represent that now, and you know the rest of my career. That is going to be a real challenge to me in the future". .

Alabama fans should be happy; the rest of the college football world should be worried that Nick Saban is happy to be honored, but he isn't done building his legacy yet. He has a hall of fame career, but he's not done building that career.

Nick Saban like most coaches will be judged at the end of the day based on wins and losses. Saban said to him his legacy is not like that. "I think the real legacy for me as a coach is not just how many games you win or how many championships you win, but it's really about the people that you affect".
