Crème Brulee French Toasts

Vino, English Village

Makes 10 servings (serving size:  3 pieces). The amount of custard ingredients can be reduced by ½ if you want to make 6 servings or less.

  • 1 large loaf French bread (sliced 1 to 1 ½ inches thick)
  • 1 1/3 cups whole milk
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

For topping:  additional ground sugar

  1. Whisk together milk, cream, eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla extract and cinnamon
  2. Arrange slices of bread in a 2 inch deep pan. Pour custard mix evenly over all slices.  Cover and allow to soak overnight in the fridge. ( If in a hurry soak on one side for 30 minutes and flip each slice and allow to soak an additional 30 minutes to absorb the custard mix)
  3. Preheat oven to 325. Arrange the soaked slices on a baking pan, lined with parchment paper, with a thin space between each slice. Bake 30 to 35 minutes until a slim knife inserted into the center and slightly twisted does not release any custard. Keep warm until ready to serve.
  4. To caramelize the tops: douse one side of each slice with a generous amount of granulated sugar and quickly flip them, sugar side down, into a no-stick pan at medium high heat until golden brown(caramelized).
  5. Transfer to a plate, caramelized side up, sprinkle with powdered sugar and syrup of your choice, add fresh fruits on the side and enjoy.
