Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL -

The eastbound lanes of I-20 are now open for traffic again.

The 10-mile stretch from exit 130 to exit 136 near Leeds were closed to resurface the road which was worn out due to heavy traffic. Approximately 74,000 vehicles travel on this stretch of road each day.

Work on the westbound lanes of I-20 in the same area are scheduled to begin in the near future. When completed, the $38.6 million project will have rebuilt 9.8 miles of interstate in both directions.

The expected completion date is early winter 2013.

ALDOT plans to do asphalt patching on eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20, which will close lanes between the I-20/459 interchange and the first Leeds exit. Once patched, they'll be milled and paved with asphalt binder, asphalt wearing surface and eventually be restriped.
