Auburn decided to make a stop in College Station before getting on the Gus Bus.
The San Antonio Express-News reports that Gus Malzahn was not the first choice to be head coach at Auburn. The Express-News reports that Texas A&M coach, and Alabama native Kevin Sumlin was offered the head coaching job at Auburn to replace the fired Gene Chizik.
Sumlin was also offered the head coaching job in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. That job now belonging to former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly.
Texas A&M gave Sumlin a $1.1 million dollar annual raise during the off-season to keep him in College Station. This puts Sumlin in the upper half of the SEC at more than $3-million a year.
