Establishing the fundamentals is a huge part of a young football player's development. D1 Sports Training has a camp going on right now for young linebackers and defensive backs.
If these kids hope to play college football, or even high school football someday, then camps like this one at D1 Sports Training in Birmingham are essential for their development as football players.
"Without a sound foundation, it's hard to move onto the next level," D1 Fitness Head of Strength and Conditioning D.J. Taylor said. "So setting a solid foundation as far as football is great."
"It's awesome," camper Dud Hogeland said. "I'm a linebacker and wide receiver so I'm going to be training hard out here."
Stressing safety and proper form is an important part of the coaches' job.
"We work on kids keeping their heads up," Taylor said. "We'll show them how to tackle (using) their shoulders rather than their heads. Wrap up, use their feet and drive through people rather than lead with their head and try to take them out like that."
And the coaches always try to keep it fun.
"We bring the energy every day," Taylor said. "We try to maintain that with our kids as well."
"Well, it's going to be loud when you hear the song and the coaches start screaming," Hogeland said. "But I got used to it."
