Helena native named Auburn's Flag Line captain

AUBURN, AL -

On a Saturday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium, there are more than just two teams on the field.

The Auburn Band also takes the field on Saturdays.

They have a new flag line captain: Helena native and Pelham High School grad Shelby Mixson.

As captain, Mixson is in charge of the choreography for the flag line's routines. She says her journey at Auburn has been a rewarding one.

"This will be my fourth year," Mixson said. "I have had such great leaders all four years that I've been here. I just want to be able to bring that to the other girls as well."

"Shelby is one of those people who is a very determined young lady," Auburn Primary Flag Instructor Kristina Cammack said. "Anytime I've given her a task, no matter whether she's been the captain or whether she's been a member on the flag line, she has done it to the best of her ability."

"She's definitely grown a lot and you can see that," Auburn Flag Line Co-Captain Whitney Packard said. "It's great to be able to get a vision of where the season is going because of the time we've spent together."

Mixson's first year was a great one, watching Auburn win a national championship. As for Auburn's painful season last year, Mixson still tries to focus on the positive.

"I'm not going to lie," Mixson said. "It was hard to be able to be there for the team when some of the students and fans weren't. But it was rewarding to be able to know that the football team has our back and we have theirs as well."

"I've had a couple of football players tell me how much they appreciate us staying there through the end when there wasn't really anyone else left in the stadium," Packard said. "I feel like that makes a huge difference in their minds."

Now Mixson is hoping to finish her career at Auburn on a high note, this time as captain.

"Especially my last year, I am so honored to be able to have this position, just being able to be here for all the girls no matter what," Mixson said.
