Posted: Updated:

The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will be busy with activity this July 4th holiday, and the Birmingham Airport Authority has a few tips for travelers to help make travel easier.

Plan Ahead

(      Make reservations and choose your seat assignments ahead of time.  Passengers can either download mobile/e-boarding passes or boarding passes may be printed from your home computer up to 24 hours prior to departure.  Consult your airline website for complete instructions.

(      Daily parking is available in the Airport Parking Deck for $12/day or in the remote parking for $10/day.  Free shuttle service is available from remote parking lot.  Follow roadway signs to either lot.

(      Dress for travel.  Wear comfortable clothing, jewelry or other accessories that don't contain excessive metal, such as decorative zippers and buttons or large belt buckles.  Wearing easily removable shoes helps move you through screening quickly.  Suggested footwear includes flip-flops and thin-soled sandals without metal.

Pack Smart

(      Empty your bag and make sure to check TSA's list of prohibited items before you begin to pack. Lighters, scissors, guns and small knives are among the items that cannot be placed in your carry-on bag. Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked bags.  For a comprehensive list, go to

(      Place all medicines, undeveloped film and cameras with film as well as valuables, such as jewelry, laptop computers, and cash in CARRY-ON baggage.

(      Although fireworks are often part of summer celebrations, remember that they are explosives and all types are strictly prohibited from the aircraft.

(      Use TSA-approved locks on checked luggage or secure zippers with disposable zip ties. Special TSA-approved locks can be purchased from luggage retailers.

Arrive Early

(      Travelers are urged to arrive at least an hour and a half prior to departure time to allow for luggage check-in and security screening.  Most airlines require passengers to check in at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

(      Passengers commuting on I-20 to the airport should give themselves extra time to allow for road construction delays.
