The Barons used a pair of home runs and a solid start by Michael Nix to pick up a 7-2 win in their series finale against the Jackson Generals Wednesday night in front of 6,432 fans at Generals Park.
The Barons took control of the ballgame with a three-run third inning, getting an RBI single by Dan Black and a two-run homer by Jared Mitchell to take a 4-0 lead. The home run was Mitchell's fourth of the season.
After the Generals touched Nix for two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by Leon Landry, the Barons would respond on a solo homer by Marcus Semien to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. The home effectively signaled the end for Generals starter Chance Ruffin (4-3, 3.66) who allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 4.0 IP.
The homer run would be the only blemish against Nix (2-1, 3.57) who picked up his second win in three starts since joining the Barons, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.0 IP while striking out six in a second consecutive effective outing.
Dan Wagner added two insurance runs on an RBI single in the 6th to give the Barons a 7-2 lead. Wagner finished with a team-high three hits, finishing 3-for-4 OF Trayce Thompson was replaced in the field by Michael Earley prior to the bottom of the fourth after going 0-
for-3 on the night.
With the win, the Barons improved to 52-33 and 8-7 in the second half while the Generals fell to 35-44 and 6-7 in the second half.
The Barons return home tomorrow to start a five-game series against the Mississippi Braves.
The Barons will send LHP Scott Snodgress (8-7, 4.97) to the hill in game one against RHP Mitch Atkins (1-1, 3.68). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CDT.
