Barons get shut out on July 4th

BIRMINGHAM, AL -

Scott Snodgress held the Mississippi Braves scoreless over 8.0 innings Thursday night, but the Barons were unable to put any runs on the board, falling by a score of 1-0 in front of an Independence Day crowd of 8,500 fans at Regions Field.

Both teams traded zeroes for the first eight innings of the ballgame in front of the fifth sellout crowd of the season at Regions Field. Recently named All-Star pitcher Snodgress lived up to his billing over 8.0 scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and striking out three in his best outing of the season.

However, M-Braves starter Mitch Atkins matched him inning for inning, scattering seven hits over 7.0 scoreless frames.

All-Star pitcher Taylor Thompson (3-2, 4.56) relieved Snodgress in the 9th but a leadoff error by second baseman Marcus Semien on a ground ball by Mycal Jones set the stage for the M-Braves to take the lead.

Jones would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Brewer and advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Michael Blanke. The M-Braves would take a 1-0 lead a batter later on a sacrifice fly by Christian Bethancourt. Thompson was the tough luck loser on the night, picking up the loss despite not allowing a hit.

The Barons were unable to mount a rally in the ninth, as Pat Egan (3-1, 2.25) retired the side in order as the Barons fell to 52-34 on the season and 8-8 in the second half. Egan tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of Atkins.
