Dr. Bert Gaddis discusses how to identify and treat allergies in pets.
BIRMINGHAM, AL -
Running nose, itchy eyes -- Summertime is the prime time for allergies, for both you and your furry friends!
Dr. Bert Gaddis says itching, chewing and scratching, as well as hair loss, are distinct indicators that your pet is suffering from allergies. You'll need to take note, though, whether it's a seasonal flare-up or a year-long allergy to something in their environment.
Gaddis says allergies are diagnosed through medical history, an exam, skin scrapes/smears or even simple allergy tests.
To treat your furry friend, Gaddis says it depends on the severity, but antihistamines, topical medications/shampoos, steroid or allergy shots can be used to help them find relief.
