As a result of a new program arriving in Birmingham, education can continue throughout all 12 months of the year.
New programs were introduced at a press conference today by Summer Adventures in Learning. SAIL will provide education throughout the school year, and not just August through May. The program was financially supported by The Belk Foundation, Daniel Foundation of Alabama, Mike & Gillian Goodrich Foundation, Independent Presbyterian Church Foundation, Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the United Way of Central Alabama. Together, the entities donated more than $500,000 to the program.
Hundreds of children are now participating in programs implemented by 19 organizations in the greater Birmingham area this summer, including the newest initiative, Breakthrough Birmingham.
Breakthrough Birmingham, a six-week summer program, allows students to participate in 240 hours of extra school time. The curriculum includes academic classes in math, literature, writing, science, and elective classes of the students' choice.
