A search is underway in Shelby County for 36-year-old Shannon Crumpton. According the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Crumpton escaped from a work release program in Montgomery sometime on Saturday. Crumpton was serving a 22 year sentence for robbery and forgery.
Since his escape, Crumpton is suspected of robbing two convenience stores; one in Chilton County Saturday night, and another in Shelby County Sunday morning. Crumpton was identified in surveillance video for both robberies.
Around 12:30p.m. Sunday, Calera police officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the get-a-way car used in the robberies. The officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused. Calera Police Officers and Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies began a pursuit of the vehicle. That pursuit ended when the vehicle eluded authorities in the Summer Hill community of Shelby County.
Shelby County Sheriff Deputies are concentrating their search south of County Road 315 in Summer Hill. Several local police departments are joining in on the search. Earlier Sunday, the Hoover Police Department's helicopter assisted with search efforts.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said they do not know if Crumpton was able to escape the area completely or if he is on foot.
Crumpton is considered armed and dangerous. In a press release sent out Sunday evening, The Shelby County Sheriff's Office urged people in the area to use extreme caution.
Residents in the Summerhill and surrounding communities are encouraged to use caution and be aware of anything unusual around their homes until the area has been thoroughly searched. Residents should make sure their vehicles and homes are locked. Residents in the area should report anything suspicious to 911 immediately.
