Alexander City chef Rob McDaniel will represent Alabama in the Great American Seafood Contest.
Taking place July 29 through Aug. 3, a total of 16 chefs will take part in the competition at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
McDaniel is executive chef of SpringHouse restaurant, and also serves as general manager of Kowaliga restaurant, both in Alexander City.
McDaniel was also a semi-finalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef South in the spring.
This is the fifth consecutive year Alabama has been asked to participate in the competition.
"I am honored to represent my home state this year," McDaniel said. "We are blessed with a seafood-rich, and increasingly well-known, coastline here in Alabama. I welcome the competition from other participants, but most of all, I look forward to sharing with them a little taste of Alabama Gulf Seafood – the way it's meant to be enjoyed."
The emcees for the competition are chef Cory Bahr, winner of the 2011 Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, Martie Duncan, Food Network Star finalist and avid supporter of Alabama Gulf Seafood and Ewell Smith, executive director of Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board.
