WHAT'S WORKING: Bibb Co. touts timber, ideal job locations and tourism

Posted: Updated:

Just south of Jefferson County and nestled between Tuscaloosa and Shelby Counties; Bibb County is known as a top producer of timber in Alabama and is striving to become the top location for those seeking a quiet and laid back quality of life.

Vastly rural in landscape, with pastures spotted throughout the county, this heavily wooded county spans a little more than 623 square miles. Less than 45 minutes from Birmingham, Bibb County is home to more than 22,500 residents often described as hard-working and religious.

The county seat is Centreville, a small and quiet town, almost geographically located in the center of Bibb. Next door to Centerville is the City of Brent which is the fastest growing city in the county.

On the job front, the Alabama Department of Labor's JUNE 2013 data lists the county's unemployment rate at 7.0% which is higher than the state's non-seasonally adjusted rate of 6.8%.  The county, like many other Alabama counties considered as rural, has endured job losses and because of that more than 60% of those who live in the county commute out of Bibb for employment.

This fact has prompted leaders, ranging from the county to the city level, to take a closer look at proactively attracting more jobs to county. Right now, county officials say they are working on action plans to aggressively market the county's second industrial park to a range of automotive suppliers who will directly serve the nearby Mercedes Benz plant.

There's also a renewed push to highlight some of the county's natural resources as outdoor recreational destinations; such as  rafting on the Cahaba River or hunting in parts of the Talladega National Forest.

From highlighting the county's beautiful natural resources to attracting new industries in hopes of providing more job opportunities, Bibb County officials believe that county is poised for steady growth.

In this Alabama's 13 What's Working report, journalist Bettina Boateng, producer Danielle Deavours and photojournalist Ben Bryson take you to Bibb County to introduce you to people of the county and hear what citizens and county leaders believe is working in Bibb County.
