UAB started two-a-days this morning down on the Southside, and two freshmen are drawing praise from the 2nd year head coach Garrick McGee. "Everybody knows it; I like big physical running backs. Guys with big hips, big thighs," McGee said this morning after practice while talking about freshman Jordan Howard. "He's a bowling ball; he's really hard to tackle."
Howard, a freshman out of Gardendale is looking to become a force in deep backfield that features Darrin Reaves. "A bowling ball," McGee says about Howard who is listed at 6'1" 228 lbs.
Also getting high marks from McGee is freshman wide receiver Jamari Staples. "Outside of the size, the length, the speed, the ability to catch the football and all that is pretty good too, but what separates him (Staples) from most true freshman is how mature he is."
Jamari Staples is a 6'4" 190 lbs wide receiver out of Lineville, Al. The dismissal of leading wide receiver Jackie Williams, who McGee said had to do with a "culture" issue, could mean a bigger on the field role for Staples.
UAB starts the season at Troy on Saturday, August 31st.
