A firearms subsidiary, located in the Birmingham area, plans to expand.
Steyr Arms will move forward with buying a new building in Bessemer for its local operations.
That decision came, after the Bessemer City Council voted to approve tax abatements for the company's expansion.
According to the Birmingham Business Alliance, Steyr Arms plans to purchase a 33,000 square foot facility on Morgan Road, and triple its workforce over the next 3 years… a $1.7 million investment.
"Steyr Arms is excited about its future plans and grateful for the thoughtful work the City of Bessemer has put into our expansion plan," said Scott O'Brien, CEO of Steyr Arms. "Moving to a larger facility will enable Steyr to utilize the region's talented workforce to increase our customer base and capacity to meet market demand. That could lead to even further expansions down the road."
Steyr Arms in Trussville is the only U.S. subsidiary that imports, distributes and assembles Steyr firearms, as well as some firearms from Merkel, Anshutz, and Caracal.
Austrian-based Steyr Arms is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious firearms manufacturers.
Steyr produces premium hunting rifles and precision sporting and tactical firearms.
Steyr Arms expects to be completely moved into their Bessemer facility by June 2014.
