Alabama coach Nick Saban has suspended cornerback Geno Smith for the season opener against Virginia Tech after a drunken driving arrest Sunday.
The sophomore was at practice Tuesday for the Crimson Tide.
Saban said Smith has some "in-house things" he must do before returning.
"We've never had an issue with Geno, he's an excellent person," Saban said. "He's never been in trouble before, never been in my office for anything.
"Some of these guys don't have the foresight to understand cause and effect. Geno has been a really good person in the program. He just made several bad decisions."
Smith played in all 13 games as a freshman during last season's national championship run.
Also, linebacker Trey DePriest returned after Saban suspended him last week for violating team rules.
