BIRMINGHAM, AL -

Authorities say youth evangelist Matt Pitt of The Basement broke his leg after jumping off of a 45-foot cliff trying to avoid police earlier this week.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said Pitt left his vehicle while he was attempting to leave the area after an interview.

Officers chased Pitt on foot, where officers deployed a taser toward him and missed

Williams said Pitt continued to run, and eventually jumped off a 45-foot cliff southeast of the Vulcan statue onto 20th Street.

Officers saw Pitt climb from a ditch after his jump, where they handcuffed him and turned him over to Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies on the scene.

Williams said medics were called, but canceled after JCSO took custody of Pitt and said they would get him medical attention.

No Birmingham police officer reported using force on Pitt, but use of force paperwork was filed on the use of the taser, even though it did not make contact with him.
