Making sure students are safe is one of the Shelby County Sheriff's top priorities, but he said that's not an easy task because his department needs more money.
Monday, Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry appeared before the county commission. He's asking that leaders allocate more money to the sheriff's office.
Curry said he wants to use the funds to beef up security at school. This includes adding a resource officer at each school.
He said, "When you look around at all the things that we're spending money on in Shelby County, we seem to have money. You know you can watch the news and see this is being built and this is being purchased. When we go say we need just a little bit of money for security in the schools for overtime and [we're] told we don't have any money, well that's a result of no planning."
Curry has presented a few plans to the commission as to how to get the money. The commission said it will take those ideas into consideration.
