ASHVILLE, AL -

The Ashville High School community is in mourning after news of a  fatal accident reached students on campus Friday morning. Ashville Police Department Chief Dennis Matthews  confirmed that 17- year- old Ashley Cartier died Friday morning in an accident involving a school bus.

The accident happened around 6:54 a.m. near mile-marker #8 on Alabama Highway 23 in Ashville.

Chief Matthew says a school bus , which did not have students on board,  stopped to pick up a student and that's when Cartier's car crashed into the back of the bus.  Ashville authorities are still looking into this accident.

Cartier was a Senior at Ashville High School. Counselors were at the school on Friday to help the students cope with Cartier's death. Patti Johnson, principal of Ashville High School, said this has been especially difficult for her school.

"In a small school this size, it's a huge lose. We all know each other. All the kids know each other. Whether you're in ninth grade, or you're a senior, everyone knew Ashley," said Johnson.

Friday night, Ashville High School will remember Cartier with a moment of silence before their football game against Springville High School.
