UAB head coach Garrick McGee hugged his family goodbye before stepping on the bus with his Blazers en route to their season-opening game Saturday at Troy.
UAB went 3-9 last season and opened the year with a 39-29 loss to Troy.
"As long as we're playing Troy it's going to be a rivalry game," UAB linebacker Patrick Bastien said. "We know, they're going to be excited, we're going to be excited. It's going to be a great atmosphere. I'm excited we're starting our season down there."
The most dangerous Blazer on the offensive side of the ball is junior running back Darrin Reaves. He rushed for 1,037 yards, 13 touchdowns during his sophomore season, becoming only the second UAB player to break the 1000-yard mark.
"I just want to do better than I did last year," Reaves said. "My main thing is to do whatever it takes to help my team win, whether it be on the field or off the field, being a leader."
The Blazers and Trojans are scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. CT.
