A "War of the Worlds" type situation put parents and students on high alert yesterday, when a promotional gag for a radio station turned to talks of a bomb threat at a local school.
Star 94.9 in Tuscumbia is in the midst of a format change. To announce it, they staged an "alien takeover" of the station, to figure out what types of music appeal to humans. The station, owned by Shoals Radio Group, played static and strange sounds at times, punctuated with "alien" conversations.
"Hello, I would like an update on the humans in Alabama and Tennessee please," one voice stated.
"Certainly. Some of them appear to be frightened by our presence," the other replied.
"It would appear they fear change."
Concerned parents and students called police.
The Tuscumbia school superintendent said absenteeism was slightly up Thursday and police increased patrols at the school to help ease concerns.
The station's programming director is apologizing for the confusion.
