The westbound lanes of I-20 will reopen to traffic on Thursday, weather permitting.
The stretch of highway closed July 8 and was expected to be closed for 90 days. A Thursday completion would mean the lanes were closed for only 60 days, netting a $900,000 incentive for the contractor.
Other work to be performed on the highway will be announced in the near future.
Approximately 74,000 vehicles travel each day between the Birmingham airport on I-20 out to the US 78 exit near Leeds. The $38.6 million project is rebuilding 9.8 miles of the interstate in both directions, and is expected to be completed in early winter.
