Healthcare professionals from Alabama attended a conference to talk about patient care relating to Lou Gehrig's Disease.
The ALS Association Alabama Chapter organized the symposium Wednesday morning at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center in Birmingham.
Attendees heard from ALS experts like Dr. Gwen Claussen, UAB ALS Clinic Director; and Dr. Frank Thomas with Baptist Health Systems.
The breakout sessions at the 2013 ALS Symposium also included various health care professionals experienced with ALS patient care.
The event's keynote speaker was Lucie Bruijn, Ph. D., who spoke about the research initiative Translational Research to Advance Therapies for ALS.
ALS is an acronym for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is a fatal, neuromuscular disease that affects 350,000 people worldwide every year.
